Why You Should Get Involved – By Neighborhood Team Leader and Woman for Obama Verta L.

Volunteer Team Leader and Woman for Obama Verta L.

Neighborhood Team Leader Verta L. is a Woman for Obama in Lancaster County. Read our interview with her below on how she became involved with the Obama campaign in South Carolina and why she feels it is important for others to join the movement.

Why did you get involved with the Obama campaign?

I am involved in the re-election of President Barack Obama because I believe in his philosophy of working to create the highest quality of life for all citizens. I read both of his books prior to him becoming a presidential candidate in 2008. I was so impressed with his dedication to the community, that I vowed that if he became a presidential candidate, I would wholeheartedly support him. That is one of the best vows I have made in my lifetime.

Why do you think it is important for others to get involved in the campaign?

It is important to be involved in campaigning for President Obama because the public can benefit from learning about his policies. Many people are easily misled by negative media reports. It is important to base decisions on facts, and I have noticed that many people start to see different views when they are engaged in a healthy debate. Volunteers help share the President’s policies with their community and make sure people have the facts straight.

What can you tell us about the team you’ve been building in Lancaster?

One advantage of my team is that they are a committed group of supporters. Since this is one of their core values, they tend to follow through on their responsibilities. They work well with each other, and most had a positive relationship with each other before joining the team. I feel I contribute to their commitment by setting a good example; praising them; providing a comfortable, positive environment for them to volunteer; and soliciting their ideas in establishing our goals. The chain reaction of my team is that they also motivate me. Through my leadership, I hope to bring out the best in them so together we can help re-elect President Obama in 2012.
