Team Detroit Registers Voters at Eliza Howell Park’s Africa Festival

Detroit- In Detroit and cities across Michigan, dozens of grassroots leaders celebrated the Fourth of July weekend by registering voters to add their voice to the electoral process. From morning celebrations to nighttime fireworks, Independence Day in Detroit was a wonderful day of family events, barbeques and opportunities to organize.

A special July 4th event in Detroit, which attracted people from all around Michigan and the world, was the 10th Annual Africa Festival at Eliza Howell Park.

This event is one of the largest annual gatherings in the Midwest to celebrate our African heritage, and attracted nearly ten thousand participants for a unique cultural and educational experience. Many Detroit volunteers donated their time to facilitate voter registration and volunteer recruitment efforts. Mrs. Dorothy B. and Mrs. Annie H. were the first volunteers to arrive on the scene and take immediate action to register voters at a local eatery.

Empowering new voters is an important goal for the Obama campaign, which is why organizers have been active all summer at fairs, festivals, and community events in Detroit and across the state. These grassroots leaders have been reaching out to their friends, family members, and co-workers to make sure they are registered. They are further ensuring that voters who have moved since the last election have re-registered at their current address.

The Fourth of July was a great day to strengthen our efforts towards a victory in 2012. We reached voters in Detroit, Pontiac, Saginaw, Lansing, Grand Rapids, and beyond. Organizers said they could not have thought of a better way to spend their Independence Day, but this effort to empower new voters will continue throughout the year.
