Team Bayou Blue Empowers Volunteers & Supporters through Day of Action

This past weekend, volunteers, team leaders and summer organizers from all over Louisiana participated in the first National Day of Action. These volunteers organized Day of Action events that asked people to register to vote in parishes all over the state.

In Frankin, LA, Tasha, a summer organizer, held two voter registrations simultaneously. About the National Day of Action, she had this to say:

We spoke to a lot of people and made a lot of connections with young people during both voter registration drives. We crashed a soft ball tournament and were successful in signing up people to register to vote.

Ninth Ward Day of Action: Jeanell and her team of volunteers worked crowds and canvassed door-to-door.

In New Orleans, Val, another summer organizer saw that her presence was the seed for greater community involvement:

I loved holding voter registration because so many people from my neighborhood showed up to help! People not even registered on but saw us out there and wanted to help.

Baton Rouge Day of Action

Robin in Baton Rouge saw that the National Day of Action, in addition to inspiring a great wave of civic engagement, brought folks from all walks of life together.

One of my volunteers decided to join us today because he has a '50 before 50' list to do before his 50th birthday in August -- and giving back to the community was one of the 50 things he wanted to accomplish.

In all, dozens of volunteers and summer organizers got together all over the state to organize nearly 20 different Day of Action events. These empowered volunteers collected more than 150 voter registrations, and got more than 200 folks from all over the state to say “I’m In” for 2012.
