Our Leadership in 2012

Excited chatter and laughter filled the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) headquarters in Baltimore last Saturday as we gathered for our first leadership meeting of the year. Old acquaintances got a chance to renew their bonds as new friends discovered theirs. Decked out in campaign stickers, t-shirts and buttons, our group was unmistakable.

We were there to ensure the President’s re-election.

To get the meeting rolling, over 150 of our volunteer leaders introduced themselves. After hearing the wide range of names, and parts of the state where our volunteers were from, we swiftly moved to the meetings’ agenda. Reminders of President Obama’s accomplishments got everyone excited; turning into an eruption when Rep. Elijah Cummings and Sen. Ben Cardin came to address the group on the need to protect the progress achieved under President Obama.

The regional leaders and community organizers then discussed the needs of their home towns, while constituency teams planned out better ways to relate the campaign’s values to Latinos, Christians, and students alike. By the end of the evening, one thing was very clear; this campaign is about people, not politics.
