“Our future depends on what happens this fall”

Young people like myself get a bad rap for being apathetic about politics and making our communities a better place. That’s why I’m organizing other young people around the re-election of President Obama.

This past Saturday, we hosted our first Future Leaders Summit. Twelve friends from Bloomfield Hills, West Bloomfield, Southfield, Detroit and Grosse Pointe Woods gathered in the Metro Detroit field office to talk about how we’re going to get other young people excited about knocking doors and making phone calls. Michigan’s Youth Vote Director Tiffany Worthy also stopped by to fill us in on what’s new with the campaign.

Educating our friends about the President’s accomplishments – health care reform, the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, student loan reform, among many others – is the first step. While some of us may be too young to vote this fall, we can encourage our parents to get to the polls. Our future depends on what happens this fall.

At the end of the day, we made videos of all attendees sharing their personal stories on why they’re supporting President Obama, and we’ll be making many more throughout the year to drive more young people to join our movement.

I hope you’ll join us in Detroit, or with young supporters in your community. Stand with Young Americans for Obama today.
