Organizing fellows: Zach on the Iowa Greater Together Student Summit

Our Obama organizing fellows are hard at work building neighborhood and campus teams across the country. As the spring fellowship continues, we’ll hear from a few of the organizers about their experiences.

On Tuesday, April 10th, we hosted the Greater Together Student Summit in Iowa City. More than 200 college students from the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, Luther College, Drake University, and Loras College attended the event in person, and even more watched online.

Actor Kal Penn and Battleground States Director Mitch Stewart spoke at the event. One of our very own Loras students, Erin—whose story I told in my last blog post—shared her life-changing story of how she was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and how the Affordable Health Care Act now benefits her and so many other students with pre-existing conditions.

The youth summit was a reminder that as a nation we have made great strides already. My friends and I recognize the importance of leaving a positive and enduring legacy for those who come after us. I see great potential within my generation: We have hope for the future, and this optimism will turn into concrete results with a second term for President Obama.

Our commitment to being our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, the status of America abroad, and the promise of a better world for future generations have all improved under the current administration, yet there is so much more to be done. As we saw at the youth summit, when we work together, we are greater together.

Stay tuned for more from Zach and other organizing fellows this spring.
