OFA-Illinois to Sen. Kirk: Don't leave Americans out in the cold

OFA-Illinois volunteers organized last week to show Senator Mark Kirk that his opposition to extending unemployment insurance is hurting his constituents. Earlier this month, he cast the deciding vote in the Senate against renewing the program, after he'd said he would support it. That decision means that 1.7 million Americans are still without benefits—including more than 100,000 Illinois residents.

He turned his back on constituents like Amee, who is struggling to heat her home during this record-cold winter. Senator Kirk should know that thousands of his constituents rely on this vital lifeline to pay their utility bills and put food on the table while they look for work.

After calling Senator Kirk’s Washington D.C. office to voice their disappointment with the outcome of the vote, the volunteers dispersed to hand out flyers on the cold streets of Chicago to raise awareness of this issue and his position. They tweeted Senator Kirk with updates throughout the day, and each volunteer also pledged to contact three of their friends and enlist them to call Kirk's office as well.

Senator Kirk should know how bad people are hurting, andwe need to keep make sure he gets the message. Will you join these volunteers in calling and tweeting @SenatorKirk? Tell him how important it is that he keeps his promise to support reinstating extended unemployment benefits.

You can call Senator Mark Kirk's office at (202) 224-2854. And if you don't get through, here's the number for his Chicago office: (312) 886-3506.
