"Never In My Wildest Dreams"

Jim wasn’t always interested in politics.

“When I was in college in Pennsylvania, there was a man running for congress who nobody believed would win. I’m not sure I even voted in that election – I did nothing. That man was Rick Santorum, and he won his first congressional seat that year.”

Jim was frustrated by his own apathy and vowed to someday be an active part of a political campaign . A New England native and recent California transplant, Jim worked in human resources for over 10 years before taking time off to volunteer as a Neighborhood Team Leader for Barack Obama in Venice and Marina del Rey.

“Our team is top notch. These people energize me with their enthusiasm – they want to be involved. Last week we made over a thousand phone calls for the President at one event! It’s been a great way to meet new people, and I really feel like I have added value to this passionate, diverse team.”

Even though Jim didn’t have a political background, his unique skills have made him an integral part of the Venice/Marina del Rey team, and he continues to expand his horizons.

“I have learned so much from the bright, smart women I work with. They educated me on things I wasn’t really aware of, like the Lilly Ledbetter Act and President Obama’s stance on women’s issues. I think it’s important for everyone to understand these things, especially now that Republicans are so vocally opposed to equal pay and equal rights.”

Jim was especially encouraged by President Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.

“As a member of the gay community, I think the President has already done a lot for us, and now he’s doing even more. I am so proud that he came out in support of same-sex marriage. Never in my wildest dreams did I think a sitting president would ever do what he did and become a leader on the issue. I was committed before, but now I’m doubly committed because I think it took such courage for him to stand up and support LGBT equality.”

Stand up with President Obama and support equality in like Jim did by signing up to volunteer today.
