Leading Helena

Beth M. became politically active after reading Barack Obama's The Audacity of Hope in 2007. "This is the absolute first candidate that I was actually inspired to help," she says.

Beth was one of about a dozen people who gathered in Missoula in 2007 and started a grassroots effort to support Obama. She became a team leader in 2008 and is now a co-leader with Greg R. in Helena. "I think we compliment each other," she says. "Greg is more data. I'm more of a public face."

Beth says she likes the way Obama treats people of all backgrounds. "I have a very left-wing mother and a very right-wing father," she says. "And I love my dad, [despite our political differences]. I was attracted to Obama by the way he treats both sides with dignity."

"When I was at the election night party, and when the newscaster actually said, 'The 44th president of the United States is Barack Obama,' I just started crying and I've never been so happy in my life. I support Obama as much now as I did then. And I think it's more important now than ever for him to win again."

Anyone in the Helena area is welcome to attend one of the monthly potluck meetings Beth organizes at the Helena library. The next meeting will be April 26 at 6 p.m.

If you can't make it and you still want to help out in Helena, look for Beth at local events like the farmer's markets or sign up to volunteer here.
