Illinois Women Connect With the Women of Iowa

Illinois Women Make Calls to Iowa

Undecided voters are most likely to engage with people who can speak to their interests. That, in short, is the logic behind events like Sunday's Woman-to-Woman Phone Bank which brought seventy people to the 218 S Wabash field office.

As Regional Field Director Nellie Sires puts it:

"Events like this allow working middle-class women here in Illinois to connect with their counterparts in Iowa. As a campaign, we definitely want to connect voters with volunteers with similar backgrounds. That way, they can have meaningful conversations about the issues that are important and relevant to them."

The event, which brought together women of all ages to make phone calls on behalf of the campaign, opened with a short briefing on the President’s accomplishments, especially those specifically affecting women. Attendees then shared some best practices from previous phonebanking experiences and talked through how to approach different scenarios.

After some quick role-plays, the volunteers picked up call sheets and hit the phones! While the dominant themes of the evening were jobs and the economy, Beanie, a lifelong resident of Hyde Park, recounts spending several minutes talking with an elderly woman in Iowa about the President’s record on health care policy.

“She says she’s been watching all sorts of TV commercials about health care and I want to help balance that out a little bit,” says Beanie, who will begin her first year at the University of Chicago’s Medical School this fall.

Other volunteers had a great experience as well, talking and laughing and getting to know each other while contacting swing voters. Michelle, a math and science teacher who made calls with her 11-year-old daughter, found the event “truly invigorating” and plans to continue her involvement with the campaign at least twice a week.

Join Michelle, Beanie, and hundreds of other volunteers on our canvass trip to Iowa on Saturday, July 28th!
