"This election cycle, I knew I was in!" says Iulia, a summer fellow volunteering in the Arlington Heights field office in the northwest suburbs.
Born in Romania, Iulia moved to Ireland when she was 11 years old and spent most of her teenage years living there. She moved to the United States just in time to witness the end of President Obama's meteoric rise to the White House.
"Barack Obama was really the best impression of United States politics I could have possibly had. I remember him striking me as such a charismatic, motivated person. He just got everyone talking."
As the president was on his way to winning the 2008 election, Iulia headed off to Boston College where she studied international relations and history. An ally for marriage equality and equal rights, Iulia also spent time writing about LGBT issues for her student newspaper.
Upon graduation, Iulia started looking for a substantial way to volunteer for the campaign. "As a woman, a student, and an immigrant, the president represents everything I stand for," she explains. She quickly discovered the Fellows program and knew almost immediately it would be a good fit.
So far, the experience has been everything that Iulia hoped it might be. "I've been really impressed with how diverse the campaign is," she explains. "Our field office brings together older people, high school kids, and people from all different backgrounds."
