Ryan K., enjoyed being a fall fellow so much that he applied for the spring fellowship as well. This two-time Obama Organizing Fellow shares his story:
Organizing is a lot of hard work. The first event that I organized, I made a lot of phone calls but only one person attended my event. I was embarrassed, disappointed, and felt like I didn’t know what I was doing. I wondered if President Obama went through something similar when he was an organizer on the south side of Chicago. I only knew that if it was the last thing I did, I was going to see President Obama re-elected in 2012 and that notion pushed me through some rough spots.
One of my favorite moments so far was when I was canvassing in Iowa. I knocked on the door of an elderly lady's home. She opened the door with a scowl on her face and an "I don't want any" kind of attitude. When I explained that I wasn't selling anything, she allowed me to speak for a moment. I asked if she’d given thought to who she was voting for she said "Oh, definitely Obama! I just love him so much!" It made my day and warmed this organizer's heart.
As an organizer, you’ll encounter many challenges to the work you do but you’ll also experience many successes. Apply for the Obama Summer Organizing Fellowship. It’s one of the most rewarding ways you can spend your summer.
