A Fellow White Sox Fan

Amber with Joe Biden

It was only a year ago that Amber M., a community organizer in Chicago’s western suburbs, was frantically seeking advice regarding her future. Amber was a senior at Valparaiso University graduating with a degree in political science and, like many college graduates, she had no idea what to do after graduation. Following the advice of one of her professors, Amber “jumped on” the Obama campaign.

After being accepted into the Summer Organizers Program, Amber says she has grown as a professional and as a citizen.

“My involvement and hard work on the campaign has been one of the most enriching experiences. I have made life-long friends and have had experiences I will carry with me forever.”

At the end of the summer, Amber’s Regional Field Director asked her to continue on the campaign as a community organizer. Amber accepted because she recognized this is a cause worth fighting for and is determined to re-elect President Obama in 2012.

“I was honored when my Regional Field Director asked me to become a community organizer. To me, there was not an option to say ‘no.’ Becoming a community organizer has provided me with the skills and abilities to be involved in the campaign at a higher level. I strive to give 100% to anything I do and becoming a community organizer has allowed me to put in a large amount of effort in the campaign. I know that as a result, I have enabled others to get involved, too.”

Although Amber believes President Obama is a tremendous leader and has worked hard to solve the problems America is faces, she also admires that he is a fan of the Chicago White Sox . While spending a semester studying in D.C., she wore a White Sox bracelet every day, just in case she ever ran into the President.

As a community organizer, Amber hopes to build the strongest and most cohesive neighborhood teams possible.

“This campaign is all about mobilizing volunteers. These teams will use their skills and dedication to help re-elect the President.”

Even after months of campaigning, Amber feels that every day is a new adventure and is still in awe of the opportunity she has been given.

“You never know who you may meet at a 1:1 or who may pick up the phone during a phone bank. I never in a million years would have imagined I would be working on this campaign a year ago.”

Amber and other organizers will be working hard these next few months to continue to build up a grassroots organization across Illinois, and they need your help! Find a local event or sign up to volunteer.
