Jane Goes Backstage with Barack in Des Moines

Helicopters began circling, sirens blew in the distance, additional secret service appeared and the President’s motorcade came streaming around the bend, backstage at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. There I was, waiting to meet the President of the United States!

Last week, as we were preparing to welcome President Obama we issued a contest for our amazing volunteers. Anyone who made 300 calls inviting supporters to the event would be entered into a drawing, and the winner of that drawing would have the privilege of meeting the President before his speech. They would be able to go Backstage with Barack.

The winner of that contest was Jane, a volunteer from Johnston, who came in on her 60th birthday to make calls for the president. She became one of the lucky few who was able to meet one-on-one with President Obama during his visit, but she is only one of thousands across the country who have dedicated their time to ensuring his reelection, and we can't be more thankful for their generosity.

If you want to be a volunteer just like Jane, use our handy Find Your Office tool to see how you can get involved with our campaign in your own community. And be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
