Healthcare Stories: Pre-existing Conditions

Last week marked the 2 year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act. To celebrate we will be sharing stories that illustrate the impact of President Obama’s historic healthcare accomplishment.

Before the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies could deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, from asthma to cancer. Today, Americans with pre-existing conditions have access to affordable insurance through the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) and Insurance companies can no longer deny coverage to children under 19 with pre-existing conditions. In 2014 insurance companies won’t be able to turn anyone down because of a pre-existing condition.

“One of my sons has Autism. Whenever we attempted to insure him he was denied because Autism is a ‘pre-existing condition’. That ended with the Affordable Care Act. I do not know what we would do if the Affordable Care Act [were to be] reversed.”

-Monica W., Los Angeles

“As a man in my mid-50s with a pre-existing chronic condition, [I have been] universally denied health coverage since I became self-employed eight years ago. Now, thanks to the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan, I have excellent health insurance at a very reasonable rate. The ACA has provided me with the financial security that I probably would have never been able to regain if left at the mercy of the insurance industry. Thank You President Obama!”

-Gary B., Orange County

“As a cancer survivor, my insurance premiums used to go up constantly. Now, it has been almost a year since I [have incurred] an increase. It is also comforting to know that if I lose my current insurance, I will be able to get a new plan even though I have a pre-existing condition. Thank you, President Obama and please keep fighting the good fight. We are counting on you.”

-Debra K., San Francisco

“My brother was born with a severe heart defect [that] required 2 open-heart surgeries before his 2nd birthday and another when he was 13. He will most likely need more surgeries during his lifetime. By not excluding him due to his pre-existing condition, the Affordable Care Act has ensured that my brother will continue to receive the excellent care that has kept him alive today.”

-Sydney W., Sonoma

"The Affordable Care Act has been crucial in establishing a safety net for me to manage and care for the Rheumatoid Arthritis that I have been suffering with since I was 2-years-old. I used to fear being denied care if there was a gap in coverage, pre-existing condition exclusions, and lifetime limits on my care. I might have gone bankrupt without the Affordable Care Act. I am very grateful."

-Vanessa W., Sonoma
