Getting Active in Arkansas: A One on One with Caleb from Little Rock

On April 16 and 17 the Young Democrats of Arkansas held their annual state convention in Little Rock. Young Democrats from across the state gathered to hold committee meetings, elect new officers, participate in training events, and plan for the upcoming events of 2011 and 2012. Caleb Baumgardner was elected the Secretary Treasurer for the 2011 year, and is also going to be a Summer Organizer this year. We recently spoke with Caleb to see what inspires him to be involved in the Democratic Party and why he is “in.”

Everyone has a story for how and when they got involved. Caleb first got politically involved in 2004, but was not “affiliated with any particular political organization or party” until December of 2007 when he was “inspired by then-Senator Obama’s run for the presidency”. He began to volunteer with the Democratic Party of Arkansas, and worked with the Young Democrats of America’s Young Voter Revolution from August until the historic Election day in 2008. In 2009 and 2010 Caleb continued to become involved in politics, volunteering at the county and state level. Caleb has been active in the Young Democrats of Arkansas since then, and this past month was elected Secretary Treasurer for 2011. Caleb says his focus as an executive member of the YDs in Arkansas will be to organize youth throughout the state to become involved in the upcoming elections, to fundraise, and to work with the other leaders of the YDs.

We asked Caleb what his motivation to stay involved was, and he replied that
“ My motivation is to preserve our country's progressive legacy because it has helped so many people, and to allow those who want to undo all that hard work to have their way would be catastrophic for our country. Because if we put the Republicans back in charge, it'll be awful for our country. I'm determined to do everything I can to keep that from happening.”

When Caleb heard about the Summer Organizer program, he jumped at the opportunity, because he’s “discovered that I'm pretty darn good at organizing and I want to put those skills to use to help re-elect the president. I look forward to working with people and making big things happen”.

Here in Arkansas, we’re talking with people just like Caleb and growing our organization at the grassroots level. Join Caleb this year to help re-elect President Obama, and organize your communities and state. 2011 could be the year that changes your life. Get involved early, and become a part of something great.
