From lunch with President Obama to organizing back home in Florida

When Hillsborough County came through for President Obama in 2008 I couldn't have been prouder.

I graduated from Howard W. Blake High School for the Arts in Tampa a few years before so I knew that area can be tough for Democrats, and even though I was away at college it was awesome hearing about all the people who pulled together to make that victory happen.

President Obama had my support because he wanted to fix our health care system. I don't talk about it often, but my freshman year in college I was diagnosed with a neurological issue that made graduation scary -- how was I going to find health insurance that would cover my condition?

When the Affordable Care Act was signed into law it felt like a huge burden was lifted off my shoulders because I didn't have to worry about getting sick anymore.

At the same time I knew in many ways it was just the beginning and we needed to get organized in every neighborhood. That's why I joined the summer organizers program earlier this year. As a summer organizer I expected to learn new skills and help empower people to become leaders in their community.

But I never would've predicted that I'd get to return home to organize for the campaign -- or that I'd end up having lunch with President Obama! Maybe you remember when President Obama had lunch with summer organizers at Ted's Bulletin? That's me sitting right next to him.

I didn't tell the president during lunch but I had interviewed a few days earlier to be a regional field director for the campaign back home in Florida. Fast forward a few weeks and here I am, working with our new Fall Fellows and making sure Florida pulls through again -- and I couldn't be more excited!

Victoria had lunch with President Obama, now you can have Dinner with Barack -- create a Grassroots Fundraising page today.
