Friday Facts—Making Homes Affordable

The recession and declining housing market have left many American families in danger of losing their homes. On Monday, President Obama announced a refinancing initiative to help more Americans stay in their homes.

This week’s Friday Facts takes a by-the-numbers look at our housing situation, and how the President’s policies are helping homeowners:

  • 5 million: Americans who have lost their homes through foreclosure since 2006

  • $2,500: Average amount homeowners can save every year by refinancing their mortgage through the President’s expansion of the Home Affordability Refinancing Program

  • $20 billion: Amount that’s been put back in the pockets of American families since 2009 because of refinanced mortgages
