Faces of the Campaign: Jenn Whitcomb

Name: Jenn Whitcomb
Job Title: Regional Field Director, Florida
Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida

Q1. What does a day at work look like for you?

I’m lucky to work with a really good group of folks, and a lot of my day is spent training and assisting my team in the field. I want them to develop strong leadership skills and well-rounded management tactics, so I like to let them take the lead and provide them with support. We hold daily phone banks to recruit volunteers and supporters who can get out in the community and organize. I often like to sneak away from the office when I can and spend some time in a local coffee shop where I can hold one-on-one meetings or catch up on my emails in a calm environment.

Q2. How did you first come to the campaign?

While I was at school in Ohio, I watched Barack Obama give the keynote address during the 2004 Democratic Convention. I was just blown away. I was inspired by his message and his belief that hard work and dedication are what gets you ahead in life, not money. I also liked what he had to say about helping people afford a college education, something I think everyone should have an opportunity to receive. I soon found myself moving to New Hampshire to work on his campaign and haven’t looked back since.

Q3. What's your favorite part of your job?

I love being able to help take someone with a lot of potential and help them build their skills and craft the next wave of organizers. For example, I had a great summer organizer who put in a lot of hard work and who has basically morphed into my deputy; that’s how this organization keeps growing and getting stronger.

Q4. What is the most unexpected part of your job?

I guess one thing that people may not realize is just how many hats you wear as an organizer and how many different skills you have to be able to develop. I’ve been really surprised at how what I’ve learned from organizing has translated into other parts of my life and made me a better person.

Q5. Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I studied to be an editorial cartoonist.
