Biking for Obama

Ellery Althaus is biking across America to support President Obama, stopping at OFA offices across the country to volunteer.

This week, Ellery came to New Mexico and pitched in with our efforts to re-elect President Obama and support Democrats up and down the ticket. We sat down to talk with Ellery about his incredible journey.

Name: Ellery Althaus

Hometown: North Truro, MA (currently biking across the Southwest)

In 50 words or less, please describe yourself…

I am a lifelong Democrat who has decided to finally get involved. I am riding a bicycle through each of the lower 48 states and volunteering for President Obama in as many states as I can. New Mexico is my 24th state. So far, I have volunteered in 17 states, made almost 1,000 phone calls, registered dozens of voters and recruited even more volunteers.

How did you first get involved with the campaign?

This is my first real involvement with any political campaign. I truly believe in President Obama and have seen a President that has made good, tough decisions in the face of unprecedented opposition. I want to inspire people by showing them my commitment to the President.

I want to make a difference in as many states as possible. I am dedicating myself wholly to getting the President re-elected because I believe that it is the most important thing I can do right now.

Of all of President Obama’s policies, which has affected you the most personally?

I have a sick Aunt, who I have watched suffer in limbo with insurance companies and try to find coverage while battling illness. For her, 2014 cannot come soon enough. I have several friends in the Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Bisexual community. The President's leadership on same sex marriage, the Hate Crime Prevention Act and repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell has given them a new feeling of acceptance in this nation -- something that they deserve and have waited too long for. If asked to highlight one policy specifically, I'd say the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Riding through all of the lower 48 states, I've seen a lot of bridges being fixed and highways repaved as a result of it.

But for me personally it is not any one specific policy, act or change that President Obama has been responsible for. It is that his policies are making this a better country.

What advice would you give to someone who may be unsure about who to support in this election?

I would say that they should take a moment and step back from all the media discussions and analysis by pundits, and really think about which candidate weighs their decisions, considers all factors and perspectives and makes decisions based on what he believes is in the best interest of all of the American People.

That is the person I would vote for. That is what this country needs. And I think there is one clear choice: Barack Obama.
